Timbers Capture First Win Of Season In Home Opener

The Timbers took the pitch tonight in Portland  for their 2018 home opener with something to prove. After 5 matches on the road due to renovations on Providence Park, the Timbers had yet to find a victory under new head coach Giovanni Savarese. That would change tonight.

The first half would prove to be an offensive showcase for the Timbers, as they would find the goal twice in a 3 minute stretch. The first would come in the 20th minute from Alvas Powell…

Followed by a touch of class from Diego Valeri in the 23rd…

Minnesota would appear to respond with a goal in the 25th minute from Miguel Ibarra, which was then overturned after video review found that he was off-sides. The Timbers would enter the locker room with 2-0 lead. The second half would bring aggressive play from Minnesota United. But, the Timbers would be the first to strike with a goal from Fanendo Adi in the 74th minute…

This is where things got a little wild. Adi would score again in the 78th minute giving the Timbers a 4-1 advantage. But, that goal would be overturned after video review. Then, Bill Tuiloma would score an own goal in the 84th minute. That would take the Timbers from a 4-1 advantage to just a 3-2 in a matter of minutes- leaving Timbers fans to wonder if their team might forfeit another late game lead. That would not be the case. The Timbers and Giovanni Savarese would hold out to defeat Minnesota United, 3-2.

Next, the Timbers stay in Portland to face off against NYC FC at Providence Park. That’s scheduled for next Sunday with a 3pm kick. You can catch all the action on The Game!
