Gary Kirsten Shows Interest In Coaching England Test Side

Kirsten’s comments came after speculations rose over Chris Silverwood, who is the current coach of England. After England’s Ashes lost hope in just 12 days, Silverwood’s future is now hanging in balance. Under Silverwood’s coaching, England lost nine test matches in 2021.

Kirsten coached India to the top position in 2009’s Test rankings. This happened within a year later he joined as a coach. He achieved the same results with the South African team as well.

In an interview with I News, Kirsten said working with England is a great honour.

South Africa has expressed interest in the England job more than once before. Kirsten was previously the leading candidate to become England’s coach twice before.

He said that he has travelled this path twice before. This was when England was hiring new coaches back in 2019 as well as in 2015. Kirsten was always clear about not doing all the formats.

He also said that it becomes a consideration only when the board of international cricket decides to divide the coaching roles.

Kirsten applied to be England’s coach in 2015 and 2019. However, he lost the position to Trevor Bayliss and Chris Silverwood respectively.

Kirsten said that working with an ODI or a Test side is what he likes. The ODI side of England is currently the best. This project is well-planned right from the beginning. The selected players are consistent.

Kirsten’s coaching career in international cricket is a great one. He worked with India and led them to the top rank during the Test rankings for the first time in 2009. He left the head coach position after India’s victory in ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2011.

Later, he joined as the head coach of South Africa in 2012 and helped them achieve the top rankings in the Test rankings.

Since 2013, Kirsten hasn’t got the chance to work with any international team. He has been coaching T20 franchises Durban Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, and Royal Challengers Bangalore. Currently, he is working as the head coach of Welsh Fire.

Kirsten says that if he gets the chance to coach England, he will opt for separate coaches for white-ball and red-ball formats.

Kirsten’s priorities lie in creating strong teams in Test matches over white-ball formats.

He said that when he left India and joined the South African team, his priority was the Test matches. He even had a word with the CEO of the South African cricket team. He told him that he was content to do the Test side.

When asked what makes coaching in all formats difficult, he explained that different formats cannibalise teams. When you focus on a single format, the other one falls apart. It is really difficult to do all the formats right.

He believes that if he coached England’s test side, he can bring the team back on track.
