The Portland Timbers have magic. That much we know. But if the betting line is any indication, it will take a special amount of magic for them to win this year’s MLS Cup.
According to Sportsbooks, the Timbers are 6-to-1 underdogs to win Saturday’s MLS Cup Final (4pm pregame, 5:08pm kick on 1029/750 The Game and 1029TheGame.com, TV: FOX).
Meanwhile, Atlanta is a -210 money line favorite (Play $210 to win $100). A draw after 90 minutes of play is listed at +325 odds.
The Timbers, who are on a 9-game unbeaten streak entering MLS Cup Final, entered the playoffs the Western Conference’s number-5 seed and promptly upset 4-seed FC Dallas in the Knockout Round match, 2-seed and rival Seattle in the Western Conference semifinal and 1-seed Sporting Kansas City in the Conference Final, all victories finished on the road. The Timbers also won their club’s only MLS Cup in 2015 by going on the road and defeating the host Columbus Crew SC 2-1.

Can a similar storyline take place for the Timbers this time around? Experts and analysts seem to think not.
But Portland seems to always find a way.
