Timbers advance with 2-1 win at FC Dallas

Associated Press

Diego Valeri scored twice – including a second-half goal while the Timbers played down a man – and the road side came away with a 2-1 victory over FC Dallas in the knockout round of the MLS Cup Playoffs.  The Timbers advance to the Western Conference Semifinals where they will meet either the 1-seed Sporting Kansas City or 2-seed Seattle Sounders on Sunday, Nov. 4th, at Providence Park (Ticket info here).  That match up will be determined by Thursday’s knockout round match between 3-seed LAFC and 6-seed Real Salt Lake.

Valeri’s goals came in the 23rd and 71st minutes, respectively.  Larrys Mabiala was sent off with a straight red card in the 57th minute, but the Timbers defense held, goalkeeper Jeff Attinella made five big saves, and Valeri’s last score sealed the road victory.  FC Dallas pulled a goal back in the 4th minute of a 7-minute stoppage time, but Portland held for the win.

“We came here in a very difficult place against a very difficult team,” Valeri told ROOT Sports after the win.  “We showed character today.”
