Timbers bring back Jorge Villafana to roster

Jorge Villafana was a key piece on the Timbers 2015 MLS Cup Champion squad.

Now, the 28-year-old US Men’s National Team defender is coming back to Portland.

The Timbers announced Wednesday night the acquisition of Villafana from the Liga MX side Santos Laguna, for whom Villafana played the last three seasons since leaving the Timbers.  MLSSoccer.com reports Villafana has agreed to play in MLS through 2021.

Villafana has 19 caps for the US Men’s National Team, and this past season helped Santos Laguna win its third Liga MX title.

Villafana likely profiles at left back, though Zarek Valentin has been solid all year in that role.  Alvas Powell has also played well at right back and Valentin could help there, too.

The Timbers sent left back Vytas to DC United earlier in the week.  They host Cascadia rival Vancouver Whitecaps Saturday at 8pm on 1029/750 The Game.

Portland is unbeaten in their last 15 MLS matches, and their 37 points are second-most in the Western Conference.
