Timbers silence Sounders, 1-0

It was a sunny Mother’s Day in Portland as the Timbers took the pitch at Providence Park to face off against their arch rival the Seattle Sounders. The Timbers themselves were shining bright coming off three straight victories and looking to make it four. This would mark the 100th match between these two clubs, a centennial of two cities that have written each other as the villain in their respective quests for MLS glory. The Sounders have largely struggled this season – currently tied for last place in the MLS. But to their credit the Sounders are coming off a mid-week win over Toronto and were looking to continue that momentum in Portland.

From the first whistle both teams would struggle to find their stride. The only near goal in the first half would be by Diego Valeri who took a shot that fell just short…

The first half of play would be nothing for the history books, with both teams heading into half tied 0-0. The second half would continue much as the first half had with a slow pace, and with Diego Valeri, Diego Chara, and Alvas Powell all having strikes on goal but none that would find the back of the net…

It would be in the 85th minute that the Timbers would finally get a goal, thanks to a strike from Sebastian Blanco…

Blanco would then put on a Chucky mask that somehow made its way to the field as part of his celebration – a nod to his childhood nickname. The Timbers would go on to win the match 1-0 and defeat their bitter rivals. The Timbers now carry a four game win streak. Next, the Timbers will take on LAFC – that’s next Saturday with a start time of 12:00pm. You can catch all the action on The Game!
