Timbers Win The West! Defeat Sporting KC, 3-2

The Timbers were in Kansas City tonight to take on Sporting KC in Leg 2 of the Western Conference Finals. This match was do-or-die for both teams. The Timbers would enter the match with an advantage in the home and home playoff series having gone scoreless in their match at Providence Park on Sunday – if the Timbers could end the match in a draw by points (1-1 or higher) they would advance to the final with their away goals being worth more.

The first half would look very bleak for the Timbers as Sporting KC would take control of the match from the start. Kansas City’s dominance would give them a goal from Dániel Sallói in the 20th minute…

But the Timbers would rally in the final minutes of the first half and would enter half time with some momentum – but still down 1-0. The start of the second half would see the Timbers continue their momentum and turn it into an amazing goal from Sebastián Blanco in the 52nd minute…

And the Timbers would continue their second half dominance with another goal – this time a header from Diego Valeri in the 61st…

But just as the Timbers were feeling comfortable, Gerso Fernandes would put the ball in the back of the net for Kansas City in the 81st. While the Timbers would still have the advantage, Kansas City would regain momentum and would keep the Timbers on the edge of their seats going into 9 extra minutes. Those 9 minutes would feel like an hour. But in the 9th minute of extra time, Diego Valeri would find the back of the net for the Timbers and clinch the match…

The Timbers win the Western Conference and look ahead to the MLS Cup, where they will play Atlanta United at Mercedes Benz Stadium. That match is scheduled for December 8th at 5pm. You can catch all the action on The Game!
